Affordable Kerala Food in Chennai Part 2 - Kuttanad restaurant

When people visit Kerala and try the food especially the non veg they are impressed by the freshness, the quantity and generally the reasonable pricing for the most part. As a Keralite staying in Chennai, the city has very few Kerala food joints that are true to that philosophy but places are popping up now. Nair mess probably but not sure if they are serving true Kerala cuisine. I've had good experiences at Kumarakom but after a ridiculously bad experience at Ente Keralam, Anna nagar (paid close to 400 bucks for 3 almost stale fish pieces in a curry) I haven't visited any of their outlets.

Wanted to try this place for a long time but didn't get the chance since it's hard to drag friends along. Finally when one of them suggested the place I happily agreed.

Location n ambiance

The place is quite close to Bessie beach on Annai Velankanni road and has a low-key board announcing the place. The restaurant is set at the other end of a path where vehicles can be parked. It adjoins an apartment and has a homely feel to it. Once you enter, you almost feel like you're in Kerala with old Malayalee songs playing. You'll also notice plenty of Keralites thronging the place for a taste of home. The decor is very practical like a dhaba with tables placed quite close to each other.  A billing counter overlooks the eating area and although there are just two or three waiters, service is brisk and people are mainly into the business of eating.

Something we noticed was that there was a tree trunk growing right in the middle of the resto like in the story Jack and the beanstalk! Only when my friend pointed it out did I notice it. Instead of chopping it down, they have decided to let the tree stay. Kudos to them for this cool move.

Tree growing right through the restaurant's roof! :D

Food:

Having come with friends, we were eager to start gorging on some kerala parottas so we set about ordering a bunch of them along with a Nadan Chicken curry. The vegetarian among us ordered the Puttu n Kadala. Obviously we were here mainly for trying the beef dishes, so the Beef roast was ordered! The waiter said it wouldn't be dry and would have gravy so it would be perfect with parottas n appams.

Parotta and beef roast was brought within ten minutes. Along with appams. Parottas were very flaky and hot. Beef roast wasn't spicy at all and enough beef pieces for 3 people to eat comfortably. Appams had that faint sweet aroma that usually means it would taste lovely. For just 12 bucks an appam this was a steal and we got to try these soft appams with the Nadan chicken curry. This was also not spicy and had the Nadan coconut oil flavor to it in plenty! If you love your curries made with coconut oil, this is the dish to order.

For four people eating to their hearts content, the total came only to about 500 rs. Forgot the exact amount now. This was pretty unbelievable to us.

Second visit the next day!

As we loved the first visit, we went back there the very next day and tried the Beef Varattiyathu (means to cook and reduce in Malayalam) which was more spicy and had bits of coconut in it. Beef was very tender cooked as usual and the spicing had more pep to it than the beef roast. However the Pepper chicken curry was amazing. The amount of peppercorns crushed into it must have been significant because we could feel the crunch of them in every bite and it was really spicy and yummy. Perfect dish for rainy weather. This was a dish that brought tears to some eyes and made ears go red!

We also got a takeaway of the Chicken kothu pori which is basically like a kothu parotta but it was more tender and made with more egg rather than parotta. Good stuff!
